BMW xDRIVE.

The intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system adapts perfectly to even the most challenging road surface conditions, ensuring optimal traction at all times. xDrive and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) ensure that the BMW remains safe and stable. Controlled via the DSC sensor system, xDrive flexibly and quickly distributes drive power between the axles in order to prevent oversteer or understeer on bends, thereby ensuring outstanding directional stability. Moreover, it guarantees a rapid, safe acceleration even on slippery or steep stretches. In critical road conditions, the DSC doesn't need to intervene as much. Thus, BMW xDrive combines all the advantages of an all-wheel drive system – traction, directional stability and driving safety – with classic BMW agility.

sDrive refers to BMW vehicles in which torque from the drive train is transmitted via only one axle. In vehicles with compact dimensions that nonetheless offer a spacious interior and a versatile, expandable luggage compartment, sDrive on the front axle along with a transverse engine is a space-saving solution that simultaneously guarantees outstanding dynamics and agility.

  • Steptronic transmission

    The 6-speed Steptronic transmission makes changing gears and driving significantly more convenient by improving responsiveness when shifting the transmission. The 8-speed Steptronic transmission makes changing gears and driving significantly more convenient, thanks to fast engine speed transitions and shorter shift times. It unites outstanding comfort with impressive dynamics and increased fuel-efficiency.

    The 8-speed Steptronic sport transmission makes changing gears and driving exceptionally convenient thanks to fast engine speed transitions and shorter shift times. In addition to automatic transmission, the gears can also be shifted manually with the gear lever, or, to be even more dynamic, via gearshift paddles on the steering wheel.

     

  • Launch Control & BMW Performance Control

    Launch Control is certain to delight drivers with dynamic, sporty ambitions. The function enables maximum acceleration from a standing start when the brake is released and the accelerator pressed. It adjusts the engine to its ideal starting speed, and the Steptronic sport transmission constantly sets the gearshift points so that when shifting up, the next optimal engine speed is available.

    The BMW Performance Control intervenes through engine control and controlled braking when turning, so that more power is distributed to the outer wheels and less to the inner wheels. This means that the vehicle practically turns itself, thus increasing driving safety and comfort.

     

  • Dynamic Damper Control

    Dynamic Damper Control allows the driver to change the damper characteristics to two different settings, for an exceptionally smooth ride and increased driving dynamics. Along with the standard Comfort setting, which provides a serene and pleasant driving experience, the Sport setting is also available. When it is selected, the damper settings are firmer and the driving characteristics are more direct and dynamic. The settings are activated with the Driving Experience Control switch in the centre console.
     

  • Electromechanical power steering & variable sport steering

    "Electromechanical power steering creates a direct steering experience while simultaneously improving agility and driving comfort. In order to guarantee characteristic BMW steering precision in combination with front wheel drive, the electromechanical steering is perfectly calibrated to the new drive concept. The servo unit and steering gear are combined in a single component. That means that the steering system functions with particularly little friction.
    In order to provide a precise and interference-free steering experience, the electronic steering works to counter the otherwise perceptible drive forces with electromechanical force in the steering gear at a level calculated by the DSC steering device. This drive-force compensation results in a level of steering precision that is on par with that of a vehicle with rear-wheel drive.
    The very rigid front end and the precise axle kinematics contribute to the vehicle's exceptional steering characteristics. The electromagnetic power steering wins over drivers with its accuracy and its direct responsiveness, as well as with the reduced steering effort required while parking.

    The variable sport steering with Servotronic creates a direct and agile steering response with less physical effort when turning. It reacts to the angle of the steering wheel with varying steering ratios. This improves handling when using a sporty driving style as well as comfort during parking and turning."

ECO PRO MODE.

The ECO PRO mode helps drivers reduce their fuel consumption by up to 20 percent, depending on their driving style – according to an internal BMW fuel consumption study. The coasting function (only with 8-speed Steptronic transmission) and ECO PRO Route (only with Navigation system Plus) offer an increased savings potential.
 

  • ECO PRO Route

    The ECO PRO Route shows the most efficient route based on the traffic situation, driving style and road conditions. The on-board computer shows the percentage of fuel that can be saved by taking the ECO PRO Route.
     

  • Coasting

    The coasting function decouples the drive train from the engine and the vehicle rolls without the transmission. The car "coasts" when the driver takes the foot from the gas between 50 and 160 km/h and does not apply the brakes. In combination with Active Cruise Control, the vehicle also accelerates back to the desired speed more efficiently after braking when in ECO PRO mode.

The Automatic Start/Stop function ensures that fuel is only used when the car is moving. When the vehicle comes to a temporary stop, for example at traffic lights or in stop-and-go traffic, the Automatic Start/Stop function saves fuel by switching off the engine as soon as the car is idling and the foot is off the clutch (manual transmission), or when the car comes to a complete standstill (Steptronic transmission).


A signal in the Info Display indicates when the Automatic Start/Stop function is active. As soon as the clutch is pressed (manual transmission) or the foot taken from the brake (Steptronic transmission), the engine springs back to life automatically.

Every time the brakes are hit, kinetic energy is generated and until recently this energy went unused. Brake Energy Regeneration takes advantage of this long-overlooked potential. It harnesses the coasting energy that is generated whenever the driver brakes or takes his or her foot off the accelerator and turns it into electricity.

This electricity is then used to charge the car battery. The intelligent energy management system means that the alternator no longer needs to run constantly, which reduces the strain on the generator. The result: reduced fuel consumption and increased performance – classic BMW EfficientDynamics.

 

OPTIMUM SHIFT INDICATOR.

OPTIMUM SHIFT INDICATOR.

Optimum, perfectly-timed gear changes can help save fuel, particularly in urban traffic and over long distances. Change gears at the right time, use less fuel – the engine’s electronics system identifies the most efficient gear, based on road conditions and engine speed. An arrow lights up in the Info Display to show when it would be more efficient to shift into a higher or lower gear. The system also recognises quick acceleration, and will delay its recommendation accordingly until the engine speed is up. Comparative tests have shown that vehicles with the Optimum Shift Indicator use around four percent less fuel.
