Efficiency in the BMW M5 Sedan.

Full power ahead – the M TwinPower Turbo V8 petrol engine in the BMW M5 Sedan seems to assert this demand with every rev. Precision and efficiency are the key to such powerful thrust. And innovative technologies keep fuel consumption to a minimum.

BMW M TwinPower Turbo V8

M TWINPOWER TURBO V8 PETROL ENGINE.

Figures that speak for themselves: with 560 hp (412 kW) and a torque of up to 680 Nm, the BMW M5 Sedan accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in only 4.3 seconds. And with the Competition Package there is even an output of 575 hp (423 kW) available – and an acceleration of 4.2 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h.
As a high-revving power unit, the BMW M TwinPower Turbo V8 petrol engine delivers statements in terms of power and acceleration. The high-performance unit derives its remarkable torque from the encounter between the M typical linear power curve and the tremendous thrust of twin turbocharging. Two separate and generously dimensioned circuits cool the engine, charge air and the engine electronics while the patented M TwinScroll charging concept guarantees an impressive response. The high torque is available over a wide rev range and delivers strong forward propulsion from just above the idling speed through to the high-rev range. This spectacular response causes the engine to react readily to the throttle at all times.
Thanks to many intelligent BMW Efficient Dynamics measures, such as Valvetronic, double-Vanos and High Precision Injection, the engine has an impressive average performance-to-consumption ratio of just 9.9 litres per 100 kilometres.

Brake Energy Regeneration.

Brake Energy Regeneration

Brake Energy Regeneration.

With Brake Energy Regeneration, part of the energy is captured when the vehicle brakes, converted into electricity and stored in the battery – thus saving fuel.
Today’s modern vehicles need a large amount of electrical energy for their comfort and safety functions. This energy is usually produced by the generator, also known as the alternator, which is driven by the engine via a V-belt. With the aid of an intelligent control unit, it is now possible to switch off the generator, which had previously been in permanent operation while the engine was running, and thus make fuel savings of up to three per cent. With Brake Energy Regeneration, the generator is only active when the driver’s foot leaves the accelerator or presses the brake − in other words, when surplus energy is available from the motion of the vehicle. This braking energy is converted into electricity and stored by the battery. This reduces the strain on the engine and decreases emissions. Fuel consumption savings mean that there is more power available for acceleration.

AUTO START STOP FUNCTION.

Red lights, traffic jams, level crossings – in everyday driving situations, there are countless instances where the engine is idling, unnecessarily burning fuel. This is prevented by the Auto Start Stop function.
The Auto Start Stop function switches off the engine when the BMW M5 Sedan is not moving. The intelligent electronics system has already calculated and checked the charge level of battery and whether other systems – such as the air conditioning or rear windscreen heating – require more energy. Releasing the footbrake starts up the motor almost instantly so that the journey can continue.
